Hipsters aren’t new, are they?

It occurred to me recently that the staying power of the term “hipster” is starting to irk me — almost as much as the people it describes. There were hipsters before trucker hats were a thing, right? Previous generations must have had to deal with people that have the same flippant attitude toward history and other things of substance…

Were the Hippies in the 60s and 70s the same kind of animal?

What about the Beatniks before them?

Or the Yuppies that followed?

Aren’t these groups just different implementations of the same herd mentality toward joining trends and ignoring history?!?!?

Ignoring history is by no means solely a hipster trait, but there seems to be a willful ignorance that trends are cyclical. Maybe it is simply backlash against what is current: obviously the last thing a hipster wants to look like is someone from 2010, so he or she clads him- or herself in a combination of anachronisms that becomes the definition of 2010.
