IE8 may be last IE

“IE8 is the last version of the Internet Explorer Web browser. At least, that’s what I’m hearing through the grapevine. It seems that Microsoft is preparing to throw in the towel on its Internet Explorer engine once and for all.”

This is the best news I’ve heard all day, but it is not all rosy. For instance, it does not guarantee the extermination of IE6.

It does signal that MS finally understands that their “my-way-or-the-highway” approach to browser technology is about as viable as a toaster in a bathtub. And that they have a mountain of work in front them when it comes to solving ActiveX dependencies. The future is a place for modular apps that scale, not proprietary systems that get more and more bogged down by their reliance on aging, bloated software.

If monopolies were not a terrible idea, then a Web browser that’s integrated with an operating system would be a marginally less bad idea than it is today.
