For all my Madison dawgs and beeyotches: By ’07 or ’08 the “mother of our souls” (bad latin joke!) will look quite different — pending State Building Commission approval. The school’s “regents” have approved a $58.85 million East Campus redevelopment project. The plan is to make a pedestrian mall that extends directly south from Memorial Union to just shy of Regent Street. The centerpiece of this redevelopment is the demolition of University Square. (For those that don’t know, it’s the only thing downtown that resembles a mall, and it’s an armpit — but it’s OUR armpit dammit! We’ll miss it.) The new site will house the Registrar, Bursar, new Health Services, and new Student Activities Center, as well as private parking, residential space, and yes, more retail space.
