I wouldn’t normally talk about Kobe Bryant on these pages, but I was surprised to hear today that his favorite spread is dumping him as an endorser. Bryant apparently got a taste for Nutella, a.k.a. the European hazelnut chocolate spread that you can feel turn to body fat in your mouth, while growing up in Italy, and has received “an estimated $500,000 a year for the right to use him in its advertising.” A spokeswoman for Ferrero, Nutella’s manufacturer, revealed a startling new trend in advertising saying the decision was not related to his sexual-assault charge, but rather “part of a broader plan to target an older audience.” The American Diabetes Association is rumored to be seeking legal action against Nutella for having addictive qualities. The image of a Kobe Bryant doll has been replaced with a childhood photo of David Bowie on the Nutella website.
